Tom Oliver Payne is an urban strategist specialising in place differentiation, identity and experience. He is a Partner and Director of Place Strategy at Hoyne, based in Sydney, where he works to translate place visions into masterplans from the earliest stages of city-making.

Tom's explores what gives places their point of difference, translating local stories, character and human experience into strategies that create long-term value.

His work spans major city-shaping projects across Australia, the UK, China, the Middle East and the United States, including Camden Lock Market and Bradfield City Centre, as well as mixed-use precincts, waterfronts, university districts and new communities.

Alongside his strategic work, Tom documents cities through writing and photography, exploring the stories, history and everyday experiences that shape people's relationship with place.

Tom teaches Urban Design and Placemaking at the University of Sydney and speaks regularly on the role of place differentiation, identity and human experience in shaping cities. His writing and photography have been published in Architectural Digest, Monocle, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Fifth Estate.
